“We cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed.”

                            - Carl Rogers

Given that you are here possibly looking for help, it may sound odd to say that I’m glad you’re reading this. Of course, that’s not because I want you to struggle, but because it says that you are making the first steps towards confronting whatever challenges you currently face. For many of us, that takes courage, to make the decision to go inward and explore what is going on for us.

People come into therapy for many reasons. It may be because of things that happened many years ago that are still affecting your quality of life today, or it may be something recent. It could be a vague feeling of life slipping you by through to a trauma that has left you feeling completely overwhelmed and unable to cope, or countless other circumstances that are as unique and individual as you.

My own journey involved having to unlearn strategies and ways of coping that worked at an earlier stage in my life, but no longer served me as I grew. They had become hindrances rather than helping me towards the important things in life: a feeling of contentment, joy, connection, and being able to meet challenges in a more healthy and hopeful way.

While therapy is not a cure all for everything, and everyone’s experience will be different, it can provide significant help for many of us. At its best, it can be transformational and a valuable part of moving towards greater self-compassion and acceptance, the foundation of learning to get our needs met more healthily, stronger relationships, and moving through this life more balanced and with a greater sense of freedom and self-trust.
